torytelling is one of the fundamental ways we perceive the world. We don’t just consume stories, digest world events with them, define ourselves and others by them, dream in them. That’s why refining our storytelling skills not only shores up our creative abilities — it exposes the secret framework of communication, giving us powerful new ways to look at and exist in the world. In this seminar, students will explore the basic strategies used to write and tell stories in print, audio and live performance, and they will try their hand at telling their own stories. Each class will survey a different storytelling strategy or genre. Studies of successful memoirs, essays, and creative nonfiction — James Baldwin, Vivian Gornick, This American Life and The Moth, to name a few — will expose techniques and intent. Then, students will use investigative tools and playful writing prompts to mine their own histories. Together, we’ll learn how to turn lived moments into scenes and craft satisfying narrative arcs. Our ultimate goal: to expand your capacity to convey your stories in new ways. Open to storytellers of all levels. No prerequisite needed, only the willingness to try new things.
