Tongue cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that begins in the cells of the tongue. The most common early symptom of tongue cancer is the presence of a sore on the tongue that does not heal and bleeds easily. Other symptoms may include a persistent red or white patch on the tongue, pain while swallowing, mouth numbness, and a persistent sore throat. In a hemiglossectomy, half of the tongue is removed, along with any affected tissue. This is done to eliminate any cancerous cells in the affected area. The remaining part of the tongue is then reattached to the floor of the mouth. In a selective neck dissection, only the affected lymph nodes in the neck are removed. This is done to prevent the spread of cancer to other parts of the body and to preserve the function of the surrounding healthy tissues. The recovery process can be lengthy and may involve several weeks or months of rehabilitation to regain normal speech and eating functions.
