Lush with Life | Underwater Oases of the Mar Del Plata Canyon

Two powerful currents converge in the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon in Argentina’s Exclusive Economic Zone. One is warm and salty; the other is nutrient-rich and cold. Together, they form the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence, one of the most energetic regions in our global Ocean. These currents help to redistribute heat from the tropics to the poles and play a prominent role in the Earth’s climate. Many Argentine members of the science team have studied the canyon for more than a decade, but this is the first time they have been able to see the animals they study in their natural environment, and the excitement on R/V Falkor (too) and in Argentina is palpable. Documenting biodiversity and directly observing how these currents support submarine canyon ecosystems can inform how the country manages and protects this region in our global Ocean. #MarDelPlataCanyon #TaludContinental_IV
