In the 1980s, this city was declared the cleanest city in the former Yugoslavia. Just 20 or 30 years ago, the banks of the Lim River were filled with swimmers, children laughing, and families enjoying clean, idyllic summer days. The stones were white, the water was clear and green ,it felt like paradise. This river is the lifeblood of the city. To ignore that is a serious mistake. Today, that same utopia is buried under plastic and all kinds of waste. We used to blame the cities upstream, each of them sharing responsibility through their neglect and carelessness. But the truth is, every community along its 220 km length bears an equal share. The Lim River has fed people for generations , through irrigation, agriculture, and fishing. In this city alone, families have raised their children on fish from this river. It still provides, despite everything. It’s rich in life… and overflowing with human negligence. I don’t understand what drives a person to throw garbage into a river. All I know is that it hurts deeply , because I remember. I remember the joy this river brought to children during summer. We didn’t need the sea , we had this. For the past 15 years, I’ve searched for answers, hoping to find a way to save it. I’ve looked closely at those who pollute it, trying to understand why. And I came to a painful conclusion: the ones harming this river are often those who never experienced its beauty. Because if they had, they would know better. They would care more. There is no excuse. This river flows through the heart of the city. It’s rich in fish, in memory, in meaning. Few places are blessed with such potential , and even fewer protect it. This is a place of refuge. A place of life. A place that deserves more.
