Who are the Cherokee - DNA History | The genetic origins of Cherokee people The Cherokee people are one of the Indigenous tribes native to the Southeastern Woodlands of the United States. Before the 18th century, they lived in their homelands, which spanned over 40,000 square miles across parts of what we now know as southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, parts of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama. They were primarily settled along the river valleys. The Cherokee language is part of the Iroquoian language family. Back in the 19th century, an early American ethnographer named James Mooney documented an oral tradition suggesting that the Cherokee migrated south long ago from the Great Lakes region, where other Iroquoian-speaking peoples lived. However, according to anthropologist Thomas R. Whyte, writing in 2007, this migration likely happened even earlier. He believes that the origins of the proto-Iroquoian language could be traced back to the Appalachian region, with the split between Northern and Southern Iroquoian languages happening around 4,000 years ago.
