There are millions of species living happily in this world. There are much more millions of species which are not even identified and classified yet and there might be even more to discover yet. But even with all of earth's current living species, it is not even 1% of all life ever existed on earth! So, what happened to the other 99% of earth's life? Mass extinctions are the answers. Mass extinction events killed nearly all of the species in the prehistoric earth. In the history of earth, there has been atleast 5 major extinctions and 20 minor extinctions which wiped out the lives of prehistoric animals. First extinction event occurred about 200crore years ago, when some ancient cyanobacteria started to do oxygenic photosynthesis. They released oxygen which was a poisonous gas for other species at that time. The last major extinction was the world famous and well known k-t extinction that happened about 6.5 crore years ago. A huge asteroid caused that extinction and it killed all dinosaurs.
