Their most famous leader, Arminius—a Cheruscan noble who had once trained in the Roman army—united the tribes and lured three Roman legions into an ambush at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE, annihilating them and halting Rome’s expansion east of the Rhine. Though briefly powerful, the Cherusci later declined due to internal strife and pressure from neighboring tribes, eventually fading into history.
