Approximately 240 medical students illuminated O' Reilly Hall in UCD recently for the School of Medicine's annual White Coat Ceremony. "The White Coat is a very symbolic representation of the medical profession. Historically it portrayed the authority of the physician and is generally regarded as a sign of professionalism... the white coat in this ceremony symbolises the responsibilities that go with becoming a doctor and particularly the responsibility of doctors to put the interests of their patients first. This responsibility is an obligation that commences as a medical student and continues throughout one's medical career." The remarks above were delivered by Professor Bill Powderly, Dean of Medicine at UCD in his opening address at the university's White Coat Ceremony, which took place on Tuesday January 24th 2012. Unique in Ireland to the UCD School of Medicine, the White Coat Ceremony sees medical students presented with a white doctor's coat to mark their progression into the hospital based portion of their medical training. This is the third year that the UCD School of Medicine has held this special event and reminiscent of graduation day, it was carried out with the same degree of pride and decorum as befits such a special occasion. Following Prof Powderly's opening address in which he welcomed the students, members of their families, friends and special guests, each of the 279 medical students were called onto the platform proudly carrying their brand new white coats. As they were called in groups of seven each student stood in front of a member of the UCD medical faculty who helped the future doctors on with their new coats.
