Hjerstsketsen - Gerben Jongsma (played by Yifan Du) | Multi-Percussion Solo Hjerstsketsen (2022), in English “Autumn Sketches”, is a composition for a set-up of percussion instruments that is performed by one player. This piece is inspired by both the many colors and characteristics of autumn and the personal stories about this particular season of one of my fellow students at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Yifan Du (1999). Hjerstsketsen is written for her and is composed on the occasion of her mallet recital on the 14th of June 2022, Amsterdam. The piece has a clear two-movement structure. The movements represent different kinds of autumn. The first movement should sound comfortable, cozy and relaxed whereas the second movement should be much more extreme and intense in dynamics and character. The set-up consists of three main elements: a bass drum (skin), four woodblocks (wood) and five glockenspiel bars (metal). The composer has tried to get as many different timbres as possible out of these three elements. Besides the three elements there is a rain stick. If possible, both the woodblocks and the bass drum could represent the colours of autumn depending on where the composition is played (this is up to the imagination of the performer).
