"Melody", 1997. Melody formed in 1996. In April of 1997, the group released its first demo, which was self-titled, although that fall, Melody had its first lineup change when drummer Kohki left. He was soon replaced by Masashi, and in April of 1998, Melody released their first mini-album, "Mahou no Melody (魔法のメロディー)", which would have decent sales in the visual underground. In October of 1998, the group appeared on the "~Approach~ Shikkoku (漆黒) III" VHS omnibus and later released their first single, "Mahou no Melody ~Ultra Version~ (魔法のメロディー ~ウルトラバージョン~)", which was live-distributed only. The single would end up circulating extremely well in the visual underground, and the group soon caught the attention of a few major labels, and Melody would soon after the single's release become a major act and sign to Panam. In August of 1999, Melody would make their major debut with the release of their second overall single, which was also titled "Mahou no Melody (魔法のメロディー)", which would be a huge flop in the mainstream market, with copies of the single being tricky to find today as a result. In January of 2000, Melody released their third single "Koisuru Hitomi (恋するひとみ)", which would have significantly stronger sales than their previous singles in the visual underground, but would fail to make much of an impression in the major circuit. In February of 2000, the group released their fourth single "Olive", which would pale in comparison to the sales of "Koisuru Hitomi", and Melody released their fifth single that May, "Ai no Hana (愛の花)", which was used as the theme song for the popular drama Kids War 2. This would help give Melody a much stronger presence in the mainstream market, and in July of 2000, the group released its second mini-album "Melody Carnival", which, although their image was boosted from Kids War 2, ended up still being a colossal flop in the mainstream market, with copies of the album being infamously tricky and pricey to obtain today. The sales of the album were so poor, that Melody were eventually dropped from the Panam roster in early 2001, and keyboardist Tatsuhiro would leave the group that fall as well. In early 2002, Masashi and bassist Ryo would both leave as well, and Melody would then end up disbanding shortly afterwards. Masashi went on to become a support member for the indies visual group MiraVills, although he would soon leave the group and retire from the visual scene afterwards. Ryo went on to join the indies group Faster Jet Spoon, which lasted only about a year before folding. He then joined visual group Klutch, which would also split in 2006. Frontman Shuji went on to start a solo career, which he would end up pausing by 2004. Shuji then reunited with Ryo as well as guitarist Jiro, and the three would then form the group The★Melody, which was essentially a rebirthed version of Melody. All three would remain active in The★Melody, which would eventually split as well in 2014. Afterwards, all three would then retire from the visual scene. In 2023, after nearly a decade of retirement, Shuji returned to the visual scene as a member of the group The Grace of Desire, which would interestingly see him reunite with the original drummer of Melody, Kohki. In 2024 however, after less than a year of activity, The Grace of Desire dissolved and Shuji then resumed his solo career for the first time in 2 decades, which he remains active as today under the alias of Melody Shuji.
