Gazetted In 1932 Karura forest is Kenya’s third largest urban #gazetted #forest located in the urban outskirts of Nairobi the the #capital #city. However, 70years later, Kindly help click the #subscribe button up to your right screen corner to support channel growth 🙏 #Karura forest was under threat! R he growth and expansion of #Nairobi city urban areas within the proximity of the forest, put it under threat of extinction of its biodiversity and ecosystem with all the trees gone as developers, #business persons, #investors, #real #estates developers wanted the forest for their #development to put up business structures, #apartments, real estates etc! And just like many other governments and politicians across the world, did the Kenyan government and it’s politicians really care? They looked more at #economic expansion and taxes to be collected from the development proposals which put Karura #forest and its #ecosystem protection and gazetation at the back out through the window. Karura and its beautiful #trees would disappear… not to mention the #birds, #animals that depended on it for the sole remaining survival in the urban area that was all now surrounded with development from other parts. All hope was lost until one #African woman Wangari Maathai leader of the #Green #Belt #Movement rose up to challenge the status core. Maathai camped in the forest with the movement running several activism projects challenging the #government and its #development proposals over protecting urban #nature. Karura forest had lost many of its trees from cutters and Maathai planted millions of trees while mobilising a new generation of #naturelovers who planted trees too and Karura tripled its #tree #forest growth. #Professor Maathai’s fierce #environmental activism won her global fame that in 2004 she became the #first African #woman to win the famous #Nobel #Peace #Prize! It’s an honour to present and remember part of Professor’s work and what better privilege to open this #New #Year #2024 with the documentary exploration drive through Karura forest #Kenya ’s third largest urban gazetted forests. This is also to remind us of the importance of #nature for protection and also for the next generation coming ahead of us to enjoy- hence environmental protection and perhaps planting a tree this year should be among our New Year’s #resolutions for all of us. How is Karura forest today? As we drive through, the forest has been divided into sections where the upper part to your right is the typical forest with an entrance somewhere along the road for nature #explorations, #photography, #camping, #athletics, etc. The lower section of the forest to the left of the road is now filled with embassies of various western countries that are constructing carefully in balance with nature- ensuring there is minimal tree and #ecosystem and #biodiversity damages. Well, it’s hoped so. There is also road construction expanding into the forest to enable the #diplomats arrive quickly to the #airport such as the Jomo International #Kenyatta #JIK as they leave the #embassies. This helps avoid the famous Nairobi #traffic jam. It’s all interesting perspectives given the environmental initiative drives and funding support from abroad- but that’s a discussion for another day. Well, let’s enjoy the new year and the drive through of what remains of Karura forest. It’s a very beautiful drive through the forest aligned with long trees on both sides of the road. Urban infrastructure is almost well integrated with #urban #green #spacing and green #infrastructure development very important aspect. Much of current green spacing is threatened with #development of expanded urbanisation into #villages by 2050. The drive would be longer but my space ran out before finish, otherwise it’s our hope these 15 minutes give you a glimpse of the beautiful Karura forests and it’s #history and how it brought the first African Nobel peace prize in #Africa to inspire more #women through #Prof Wangari. She protected #Uhuru forest #park but now closed for installations to explore in future. With a beautiful history and #story, there is also an end that it’s so unfortunate on 25th September, 2011 Professor rested and was laid to rest. From #earth we came, to earth we return. But she left us this beautiful forest Karura, now managed under the Kenya Forest Service, we can still enjoy and hopefully protect it more to ensure minimal development for its survival. With that @travel-culture team would like to wish you a very merry #happy #new #year! Thank you for all the support you have given us the past year #2023 through viewing the documentaries, given us hour times, channel subscriptions, comments, likes, shares, article exhibitions, word of mouth, friendships, etc all interactions that have helped us grow. Thank you thank you 🙏 A toast to cheers of long long life, wealth, prosperity, health and food banquets! God bless you forever❤️ Happy New Year, Pal!
