Julian Zugazagoitia, Director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, spoke to the Mellon Foundation about how museums can inspire and allow us to expand our understanding of ourselves. Art museums play a vital role in our civic life. They are the keepers of histories and aesthetic traditions, and places for convening, learning, and inspiration. Given the unique role of museums in our society, they must reflect the demographics of the richly diverse communities they serve.
