African blackwood is one of the most historic and iconic tree species in the world. It is the national tree of Tanzania and in Swahili speaking regions it is known as mpingo. Musicians call it granadilla, and scientifically, it is Dalbergia melanoxylon. It is one of the most prized and expensive woods in the world, and is known as the Tree of Music because of its international use in the manufacture of woodwind instruments. Because of its distinct tonal and machining properties users of the wood often describe it as irreplaceable. Unfortunately, because of widespread use, it is becoming endangered and users in all sectors are searching for substitutes, many of which lack the properties for which mpingo is so well known. Join the LCA and Bette Stockbauer from the African Blackwood Conservation Project as we take a look at the projects that are trying to ensure the future of the 'Tree of Music'.
