Not all farmers are for-profit commercial operations. Metro Farms, located in Chicago, Illinois, is one example of how non-profits have embraced aquaponics and community gardens to educate youth and engage their communities. In this episode Don Patterson, the CEO of Metro Farms, and Treana Johnson tell the story of how farming can be a tool for empowering people’s lives and promoting healthy eating habits. Metro Farms is the fourth stop Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) staff made on our quest to find farmers throughout the Midwest raising animals and growing plants in water. Metro Farms produces fresh, locally grown produce and live fish for people on Chicago’s westside. Metro Farms is an outreach project of the Urban Transformation Network.
