It is made of two smooth laminae fusing in the two lower thirds in the midline, with the upper third remaining unfused, creating the laryngeal notch. The laryngeal prominence caused by the fused laminae creates the well-known Adam's apple, that can be seen from the outside. The cartilaginous superior and inferior horns are created by the projections of the posterior superior and inferior borders of the cartilage respectively.
