Managing your property with an ecological lens does not mean your yard has to look “messy.” Changing your tactics, even a little bit, can increase habitat value and boost biodiversity – without skimming on the aesthetics. A yard that functions ecologically can look beautiful while at the same time it literally vibrates with life. Join Kate B. Lepis, Ph.D., as she shares the techniques she uses at home and at Deep Cut Gardens to increase the life-giving potential of the properties she manages. Learn gardening techniques that will ensure your yard supports beneficial insects (and the food web they support) at all life stages and through all the seasons. Kate studied wildlife biology at the University of Rhode Island but fell in love with plants when she took a field botany course. She has been a dedicated plant nerd ever since. After graduation, she began her career in horticulture by working with a local landscape designer and completing two certificate programs from the New York Botanical Garden in Field Botany and Commercial Horticulture. She earned a Ph.D. in Plant Biology with a focus on plant systematics at Rutgers. Throughout this journey, her focus has been learning as much as possible about the use of native plants in the landscape. Currently Kate is the horticulturist at Deep Cut Gardens, Monmouth County Parks. In April 2025 she joined the board of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey as the State Botanist.
