The deaths of siblings Kalu, Kamlesh and Mamta Meena and their children have been linked to a dispute over dowries, an illegal practice where often hefty sums are paid by Indian parents to marry off their daughters. Relatives of the victims said the sisters had married brothers from the same household and lived under the same roof, but suffered constant violent attacks at the hands of their husbands and in-laws. The abuse worsened when the father of the women failed to meet demands for more money. India outlawed the paying of dowries more than 60 years ago.
