SOUTH NORMANTON: Bolsover Parish #14 of 16

This one is sandwiched between Pinxton and Blackwell parishes in the district of Bolsover, just off the M1 at junction 28 – a major road junction that we discuss in much more detail later in the video. It’s another parish within Bolsover that grew as a result of mining. The main collieries in the area for which the village’s population grew around were ‘A’ Winning and ‘B’ Winning, both mentioned in the Blackwell video. It started life as a small settlement based around church – St Michael and All Angels. Around 1888 the only houses that were here were a few cottages around the church. It truly was at that time, a farming hamlet. Since then though it’s grown immensely, and even though it hasn’t adopted town status officially it does have something of a small town centre with a market place. Around 1921 the village began its main industry of mining. Many people moved in from the surrounding countryside to work in the mines. People came to the village in their hundreds. For a village with such a high population, you would expect there to be plenty of amenities in and around it. You will not be disappointed in that regard if you venture into this part of Bolsover. It even had its own purpose built cinema in 1911, named “The Picture Palace”. The market place even has an odd looking sculpture, called Time Span 2007. It’s a striking public sculpture designed by a man called who’s ancestor ran a hardware shop in the 1930s right opposite the site of the artwork! At the end of Lees Lane, which is a football ground which is the home of the “Shiners”- the nickname of the team that play there, but it’s also a term used to describe anyone who comes from SOUTH NORMANTON. **** My name is Andy.
