SOCAN, MROC, and Manitoba Music present... This session provided an overview of two of Canada's important music rights organizations, SOCAN and MROC, including background to why SOCAN and MROC exist and how they put money back into the pockets of songwriters and musicians. Participants learned about performance royalties, neighbouring rights, and other copyright issues facing the music industry. Panelists helped artists and copyright owners better understand how they can liaise with these organizations to get the most out of their performer and songwriter rights. About SOCAN The Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada is a not-for-profit organization that represents the Canadian performing rights of millions of Canadian and international music creators and publishers. SOCAN is proud to play a leading role in supporting the long-term success of its more than 100,000 Canadian members, as well as the Canadian music industry. About MROC The Musician's Rights Organization Canada is a non-profit collective that collects and distributes royalties for performers. These royalties are payable under copyright legislation and reflects the rights of performers to be paid fairly for the broadcast and public performance of their recorded works. In Canada, these royalties cover a variety of broadcasts, including commercial radio, CBC radio, satellite radio, and background music.
