(28 Mar 2019) Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday said he was confident the freedom of the elections would be protected despite alleged attempts of Russian interference, as he addressed a rally in the run-up to Sunday's vote. Poroshenko's election rivals include former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy. At the rally in the city of Lviv Poroshenko also said that there was not a "big gap" between him Zelenskiy, who is leading the race according to some opinion polls. Meanwhile, National Corps, a far-right political party, protested in Lviv during Poroshenko's campaign rally. Ukraine's ultra-right activists have shadowed Poroshenko as he campaigned across the country, accusing him of corruption and demanding prison sentences of his associates who are accused of involvement in a military embezzlement scheme. Poroshenko rejected the accusations and ordered a probe into the scheme. Ukraine's presidential election will be held on Sunday five years after mass protests drove the pro-Russia president to flee the country. Opinion polls before the March 31 vote indicate that no one will come close to the 50-percent support needed to win in the first round.
