Dinosaurs From The Yixian Formation

The Yixian formation, located in what is now Liaoning Province, situated on China’s North-East coast, is a palaeontologist’s paradise. First investigated by Japanese scientists in 1933, the site initially drew interest for the large number of unique reptiles and fish discovered there up until the end of World War 2, when Chinese scientists took over the excavations. It wasn’t until the 1990s when the first dinosaurs and birds were discovered at Yixian and, to this date, over 30 species of dinosaur have been unearthed at the site, including some famous faces. The diminutive ceratopsian Psittacosaurus (sit-ACK-oh-saurus), turkey-like Caudipteryx (cord-IP-ter-IX) and a few species of Titanosaur have all been described from fossils originating in the Yixian Formation.
