Diesel consumption makes up around 12% of our total operational emissions. That's why we're developing a pilot pongamia seed farm in Queensland, Australia to explore the potential of pongamia seeds as a sustainable renewable diesel feedstock. While electrification technology matures, biofuels are an immediate way to reduce our reliance on fossil diesel fuels. Here are 3 reasons why we’re investing in pongamia trees to help make the switch from diesel to renewable diesel: 🌱 Pongamia trees absorb and store carbon dioxide during their growth, and produce seeds that can be harvested to make biofuel. This creates a lower carbon cycle when the resulting biofuel is combusted for energy, meaning we could emit less carbon when powering our trucks with renewable diesel made from pongamia. 🌱 They are renewable because they produce new seeds every year, and the thousands of seeds they produce are rich in oil content, meaning we can extract about four tonnes of oil from every hectare annually, while the trees remain in the ground. 🌱 They can grow in challenging environments because of the friendly bacteria that live in their tree roots. These bacteria turn nitrogen from the air into food for the tree while improving soil health. Investing in biofuels like renewable diesel is one of many ways we’re making progress towards net zero emissions from our operations by 2050. #biofuel #decarbonisation #FindingBetterWays More information can be found on our website: https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/rele...
