Hi, welcome to another scene. Before i start my chat, i want to apologize for the quiet sounds, apparently a mess with audio settings. Winter is behind us, it is the time for flora and fauna to get back to nature. We are headed for a very dangerous and wild rapid. All of Finland has had a lot of snow this winter and now that spring has finally arrived, snow is melting rapidly. All that water is now being transported to the sea, creating enormous rapids. Spring is the best season to see dangerously wild rapids. We walk in the 3.5 km long 'Koskikara Nature Trail' in the municipality of Nurmijärvi. Nurmijärvi, meaning 'Lawn Lake', is derived from a lake that used to be near the village center. It was drained in the early 20th century and is now little more than a few flat fields. The earliest mention of Nurmijärvi dates back to 1488. According to the land register of 1539, there were 15 villages with a total of 113 houses. The first church in Nurmijärvi (St Martin's Church est. 1565) was built at the end of the Middle Ages. However, it was rebuilt 2 times, in 1692 and the current one completed in 1793. The River Vantaa flows through the municipality and there are at least 2 major rapids, Nukarinkoski and Myllykoski. This beautiful but precarious path leads us to Myllykoski. Nurmijärvi is best known as the birthplace of Finland's national author, Aleksis Kivi (1834 - 1872). The municipality's coat of arms refers to his most famous literal work, Seitsemän veljestä ('the seven brothers') from 1870. In the next scene i will tell more about the Myllykoski rapids, which we will then visit. Definitely a spectacular sight to see and experience (see preview at the end).
