In this first episode of our brand-new series, Proclamations of Christmas Pt 1: Mary’s Song, Walking The Text Founder Brad Gray examines Mary’s song, the Magnificat. While Jesus is obviously the reason for the season, music is one of the unique aspects of the Christmas season. In fact, the beginning of Luke’s gospel is jam-packed with prophetic songs celebrating the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah. But each of these songs offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the Biblical characters who sing them. For instance, Mary’s song begins with the word “magnify,” which in Latin is “Magnificat.” It’s a word that means to magnify, exalt, glorify, and make big. Yet Mary is a young, teenage girl living in an impoverished part of the Roman empire. If anything was big, it was Rome. Nevertheless, Mary’s song exudes a fiery confidence in God’s faithfulness despite centuries of foreign oppression. Consequently, Mary was blessed for her belief. But as you’ll discover in this episode, Mary’s unhesitating belief didn’t just happen. By the end of Proclamations of Christmas Pt 1: Mary’s Song, you’ll see how belief is the natural byproduct of being immersed in the Scriptures and living a life that’s animated by hope!
