In this native tree, Michael finds a model of defiance–the madrone defies the culture of natural resource extraction with its winding branches that care nothing about straight lines or lumber. It is also a critical example of the importance of creating meaningful relationships with those around you: through a mycorrhizal network, the madrone stays healthy, reminding us that nobody can really stand alone.
