With the Gulf of Maine now closed to shrimp harvesting, restaurants, home chefs, and fans of the shellfish have had to rely on frozen shrimp from as far away as Thailand. But researchers at UNH have designed a small scale aquaculture program that could allow practically anyone to grow their own fresh, local shrimp. The UNH researchers have perfected a unique biofloc , or "bath", for the shrimp to grow in, that keeps the water clean and provides a secondary food source. In aquaculture, each biofloc is unique so they created a version that can be used in a small scale system that could be installed in a basement, a heated green house, or virtually anywhere. The shrimp being used can grow in warmer waters and double in size in a few days. It could be used in classrooms for learning, provide fisherman with a new source of revenue, or even provide farmers with a new crop in the off season.
