Helping out at the local drop-in centre. Shoveling your neighbour's sidewalk. We do plenty of things naturally as humans out of pure kindness. And while being kind is important, there's an economic motivation for building strong communities. Citizens in our city and our country are increasingly living alone, and an epidemic of loneliness is taking root. What can we as individuals do about it? And why should we? The answer: it's good for the economy. Todd Hirsch is the Vice President and Chief Economist for ATB Financial. Hirsch holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics from the University of Alberta and a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Calgary. He has worked as an economist for over 20 years and has taught economics for nearly a decade. Hirsch speaks to audiences across the country, often providing commentary to media. His latest book, Spiders in Space: Successfully Adapting to Unwanted Change, presents a selection of adaptive traits that can help us not only survive, but thrive, when unwanted change comes our way. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
