(2 May 1999) Natural Sound An anarchists' march ended in violence in Berlin on Saturday, as protesters clashed with riot police in the city's Kreuzberg district. Around 15-thousand people joined the march, which is held every May 1. In recent years there have been regular clashes with the authorities at the event and riot police were out in force. Police said they moved in with tear gas and nightsticks after youths began throwing stones and bottles at officers lining the march. Numerous injuries and arrests were reported, but exact numbers were not immediately available. About 10-thousand young people had gathered in the Kreuzberg district, a heavily Turkish neighborhood in western Berlin, for the march called by radical leftist and anarchist groups. About 5,000 officers were deployed, and police took 60 people into temporary custody before the march began for wearing masks or carrying potential weapons such as clubs. The demonstrators were calling for an end to NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia and the release of Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, who was arrested in February and faces treason charges in Turkey. On Friday night, about 350 young people blocked an intersection in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district and began throwing bottles, cans and stones at police when they began to clear the blockade. Six people were arrested and 344 others detained temporarily.
