The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations Gameplay (Tet Offensive 1968)

The Tet Offensive of 1968 was the turning point of the Vietnam War. Over 80,000 Vietcong and North Vietnamese soldiers attacked almost every major town and city in South Vietnam within two days. Saigon, South Vietnam's capital and its most heavily-defended city, was attacked by 35 battalions. Shown in this video from The Nam: Vietnam Combat Operations are PAVN and NLF troops ambushing and completely routing ARVN and US troops near the US Embassy and National Radio Station, two of the key targets during the first battle of Saigon (there were three in 1968 alone). Victory is secured in this scenario by fighting too close for effective air support and by sheer force of numbers alone. In real life, the PAVN and NLF were repulsed with heavy casualties, but hard fighting continued in the Chinese neighborhood of Cholon for over a month. Though a military defeat for the Vietcong and North Vietnamese Army with over 50,000 dead compared to less than 10,000 allied deaths, the fact that they temporarily held high-value propaganda targets like the US Embassy and the Imperial City of Hue gravely shook the American public, who were assured that the end of the war was near and that the enemy was only capable of small ambushes in the far reaches of the country. A month after the Tet Offensive, President Lyndon Johnson said he would press for peace, stop the bombing of North Vietnam and not seek another term as President. From then on, North Vietnam's leaders knew it was just a matter of time before final victory came. The Nam : Vietnam Combat Operations is a real time strategy game created by Tiger Yan which recreates company-sized combat operations set during the American phase of the Vietnam War (1965 – 1975), termed by Vietnamese as the Second Indochina War. Players can choose to play as the US Marine Corps or the Vietcong (VC) and People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN). Marines can draw support from additional service branches like the Army for Special Forces (SF) troops, plus the Air Force and Navy for land and carrier-based air support. The VC and PAVN in turn, can set-up and capture towns, cities, villages or go underground and fight from hidden tunnel systems. In theatres like Laos and Cambodia, they can enlist the aid of the Pathet Lao and even the legendarily vicious Khmer Rouge.
