This piece is a videogame/installation/instrument in which a player/participant is invited to explore a virtual space curated by me in the program Max/MSP involving 61 different sonic objects – they control a central character (a yellow dot) which receives the sound from the objects in stereo and they can move around and pick up the objects via the use of a controller or a computer keyboard. There is no aim, just an experience and – to some extent – a canvas of different sonic objects players can combine. Things like the speed of the player and direction they face can be controlled as well. Standard musical form or structure is made up 3 dimensions: time (the form of which determines events and rhythm and so structure), pitch/oscillation (which in turn is what creates timbre through overtones etc.) and volume/amplitude (which also created timbre through how loud the overtones are). My idea of a 4th dimension is 'space' - a new form of structure which we can only conceive of through the other 3. We can wander around a space and thus in our wandering create a piece with time, pitch and volume involved but what we don't imagine in that conception is how space is concerned in the creation - much like the ways we would perceive the 4th dimension in geometrical space if we were to wander around.
