Hello everyone, I’m Abhay Chandra. This video starts a new challenge I’m setting for myself: learning Japanese from scratch. I’ve wanted to learn Japanese for a long time. I watch anime, read manga, and I’ve always wanted to experience the language in its original form rather than through subtitles. Another reason is that Japanese is considered one of the hardest languages for English or Hindi speakers to learn. So this is also a way to challenge my brain and push myself out of autopilot mode. And there’s one more reason. I’m traveling to Tokyo in May, so it would be amazing if I can actually understand and speak a little Japanese by then. This is going to be a daily learning series where I document the entire journey. What I study, what works, what doesn’t, and how my understanding evolves over time. In Day 1 I cover: • How the Japanese language system works • Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji explained • Why Japanese writing is very different from English • My learning strategy going forward • Immersion based learning instead of translation • My plan using Anki decks and media immersion Future videos will include: • Learning Hiragana and Katakana • Studying Kanji with Anki • Watching Japanese content for immersion • Sentence mining from anime and videos • Trying to speak with native Japanese speakers This series is basically a public experiment in language learning. Let’s see how far I can go. New videos coming regularly documenting the journey.
