According to a recent study , researchers started keeping an eye on the dying star, which was a red supergiant with the designation SN 2020tlf and was situated about 120 Million Light-Years away from Earth. The study found that they began their observations more than 100 days prior to the star's dramatic end. The researchers witnessed the star erupting with dazzling bright flashes as large globs of gas blasted out of the surface of the star. This occurred in the lead-up to the event. The researchers added that prior investigations of red supergiants that were going to blow their heads showed no indications of violent emissions, thus the discovery of these pre-supernova fireworks displays came as a major surprise to them. In a statement, a research fellow described the discovery as "A Breakthrough In Our Knowledge Of What Huge Stars Do In The Moments Before They Die." "For the first time, we watched a red supergiant star explode!". Red Supergiants are by far the most massive stars in the cosmos, with a volume that can be hundreds or even thousands of times that of the sun. These huge stars, like our own sun, create power via the nuclear fusion of atoms in their cores, just like our sun does. However, due to its massive size, red supergiants are able to create considerably heavier elements than hydrogen and helium which are produced by our sun. The supergiants' cores experience an increase in both temperature and pressure as a result of the consumption of ever more massive materials. In the end, after these stars begin the process of combining iron and nickel, they run out of power, their cores collapse, and they release their gassy outermost atmospheres towards space in a catastrophic explosion known as a Type II Supernova. This event is known as the Big Crunch. Scientists have spotted red supergiants until they go supernova, but they have examined the consequences of these cosmic explosions. However, until this discovery, scientists had never watched the entire situation play out in real time before. In the summers of 2020, the researchers of the new study started their observations of SN 2020tlf. At that time, the star was flickering with brilliant flashes of radiation, which the scientists eventually determined to be gas erupting off of the surface of the star. On Mauna Kea and the Pan-STARRS1 Telescope at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy, Researchers tracked the irritable star for a total of one hundred and thirty days using two observatories in Hawaii. At last, close to the conclusion of that time period, the star experienced a boom. The group found some evidence of a thick cloud of gas encircling the star during the time of its explosion. The researchers speculated that this gas was most certainly the same gas which the star had expelled in the months leading up to the explosion.
