Martinstor Gate The Martinstor (Martin's Gate) is one of the two remaining medieval city gates in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. The Martinstor stands tall at approximately 63 meters (207 feet) and features a blend of Gothic and later architectural styles due to various renovations and additions over the centuries. One of its most notable features is the half-timbered upper level and the steeply pitched roof with a clock and lookout windows. The structure’s narrow passageway below is now used by pedestrians and trams, maintaining its function as a gateway between Freiburg’s Old Town and the surrounding areas. Martinstor is not just an architectural monument, but a symbol of Freiburg’s resilience and rich history, standing as a picturesque and functional landmark in the city’s vibrant urban landscape. Freiburg Minster (Cathedral) At the heart of the Old Town stands the Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster), a Gothic masterpiece with origins dating back to the 13th century. Its 116-meter-high spire is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Europe and survived World War II largely unscathed. Münster Market Every morning except Sundays, the square around the cathedral transforms into the Münster Market, a beloved local tradition.
