 “MODHYARATER CHUPKOTHA” is set, back in the early Nineties. Parashpur is a suburban town in Bengal, not as flourished as Kolkata. The Chowdhuris of Parashpur were once quite well known but by the nineties, left only with a dilapidated house, a meagre amount to sustain their lives and a handful of scruples and morals which the family fiercely clings on to - the way a warrior clings on to his sword. The play revolves around four characters. Three of them are members of this family - the eldermost Brajamohan, his daughter Neerobala, and Brajamohan's eldest granddaughter Indira. The fourth one is Indira's home tutor Aranya, who is an orphan. Brajamohan's father late Haramohan Chowdhuri was a freedom fighter and also an actor. He protested against the British rule through his patriotic plays and also got arrested multiple times by the Gora police. Yet, the old Brajamohan holds a feeling of disdain towards Acting and all actors in general. This is because his elder son Manmohan had abandoned the family and gone far astray to pursue his career as an actor. The otherwise affectionate Brajamohan suddenly grows scornful when he comes to know that Aranya also nurtures interest towards acting and watches plays regularly. This play is a story of a single night, when Aranya goes to watch a One wall performance of a play called Ghanta-Fatak. But unfortunately the actress playing the female lead does not turn up causing a huge turbulence and the show gets called off. An infuriated mob pays heed to a false rumour and holds the lead actor Nabin Kumar accountable for the actress's disappearance. Things take a dramatic turn when Aranya steps in to save the innocent and clueless Nabin Kumar from the mob by disguising him as an old, retired professor of Aranya's college and taking him secretly to the Chowdhuri Baari , so that he could spend the night safely. The disguised Nabin Kumar's encounter with the three members of this family, becomes influential in digging up several truths that all three of them were hitherto running away from.
