If the order of the categories is not meaningful (e.g., gender, religion, race), then the variable is nominal and the regression type is multinomial logistic. If the order of the categories is meaningful and there are only 2 categories, then the variable is binary. If there are more than 2 categories, then the variables is ordinal. In both cases, the regression type can be either logistic or probit. *** In the next lesson we will look at the other two types: logistic and probit regression, which are used when your variable is “ordered categorical” (i.e. the order has meaning).
