In 1951, Wolf Creek Dam was created in order to combat flooding from the Cumberland River. With the creation of Wolf Creek Dam came one of Kentucky’s most popular recreational activities, Lake Cumberland. In the wake of Lake Cumberland’s creation, the city of Burnside, once located along the Cumberland River, was forced to relocate while the old town was flooded. Some residents moved “up on the hill” above the old town, but many others moved to other parts of the state.
