RMIT Professor Joe Siracusa says protesting lockdown restrictions in the United States represent an "awakening" of personal power and responsibility in US citizens. Hundreds are gathering in states across America – including Virginia, Michigan and Texas – to protest the lockdown restrictions which remain in place, causing food shortages in some areas. Mr Siracusa told Sky News people have realised "that they have to do something themselves and of course they are going to attack people who are holding them back”. He said this behaviour was almost typical of Americans because “you can only tell them what to think, and what to say and where to stand for so long before they push back”. “What they do is maybe symbolic, at least it helps them". President Donald Trump has been pushing to reopen the economy but has faced opposition from his medical advisors and state governors who ultimately determine when to reopen the states. Mr Siracusa said the real problem was if the US did not have the capacity for testing once restrictions are lifted. “The consensus in the medical community is if we don’t find the virus, the virus will find us,” he said.
