Tips on being a Choir Accompanist Notes: Not an exhaustive list - just what I want to talk about Prep as if a solo. In the sense that you want to know where the melody line is, where ALL your phrases are, and make it as interesting as possible. Sometimes I see pianists and I think “could they be any more bored”? Be in the moment and play as if you’re having the time of your life Know your role in the music. Listen to the choir. Breathe with them. Play at least a few times with headphones in with a choir. Play with metronome and be able to play faster than the tempo because you never know if that’s how they’ll want to perform it and you want to be ready. Know their parts When you are rehearsing or performing, ALWAYS have the director in your mind, not just sight. For me, it’s one of my most fun games, to be as together with the director as possible. (Some are more fun to do this with than others). Position the piano so you can see them. This is my responsibility. In rehearsal, listen to everything they say. Make notes whether it’s for you or the choir. You might have to run a sectional and knowing all of this information is important. It’s always ok to ask questions If there’s one thing you could buy to be a better accompanist, its an iPad Have fun. Literally, playing beautiful music with a choir and following a director is one of the most fulfilling, fun, inspiring, life-giving experiences I can do on this earth. There are few things I enjoy more. It’s up there with enjoying nature with my husband and kids. If we never lose sight of the enjoyment of this we can’t go wrong.
