Jammu and Kashmir, which recently voted in its first election in a decade and its first as a Union territory since the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, is anxiously awaiting the end of President’s rule and the formation of a new government. As the voting is now concluded, the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance secured 49 out of the 90 seats, comfortably ahead of the majority mark of 46. The National conference secured 42 seats. Omar Abdullah will become the next Chief Minister, the National Conference president Farooq Abdullah announced. The BJP won 29 seats, almost all of them in the Jammu region. Meanwhile, the Congress secured just 6 seats, all in the Valley. The Congress, which was expected to give a tough fight to the BJP in Jammu, looked set to draw a blank. Mehbooba Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which exit polls predicted would play kingmaker in case of a split verdict, was expected to win at least eight seats. However, it secured just 3 seats. The PDP ruled the erstwhile state in coalition with the BJP from 2015 to 2018. The party is believed to be struggling due to its controversial alliance with the BJP, which experts say “facilitated the BJP's entry into politics in the state.
