I’m getting really worried. Shakuntala (55) (Reassuringly): Daughter-in-law, don't you worry. Rohit will get us to the market right on time. You just make sure you hold the cloth cover securely. Diya (28) (With a faint smile): Please don't worry, Mom. I have a firm grip on the cloth; nothing at all is visible from the outside. Narration: Diya and her family were traveling to the market in a bullock cart when, along the way, they encountered their village Sarpanch (headman), Dheeraj. Dheeraj (59) (Surprised): Ramlal, where are you off to with your entire family in that bullock cart? And what exactly are you carrying back there, all covered up with that cloth? Ramlal (56) (Smiling): We are simply heading to the market. As for what’s under the cloth—well, you’ll only find that out once you get there! So, why don't you come along to the market as well? Something rather special is going to happen there today. Narration: Hearing Ramlal’s words, Dheeraj burst into laughter. Dheeraj and his cronies laughed heartily. Dheeraj (59) (Laughing): Come on, Ramlal! Just because your crops failed, have you lost your wits? Why are you making a laughingstock of yourself and your family? Go on, go home! I don't want anyone making fun of you—that’s precisely why I’m trying to reason with you. Ramlal (56) (Smiling): Thank you for your concern, but I’m running late. I really must be going now. Narration: Saying this, Ramlal instructed Rohit to drive the cart forward, and they set off. Once Ramlal’s cart had moved a short distance ahead, Dheeraj turned to his henchmen. Dheeraj (59) (Perplexed): Ramlal’s crops were completely ruined, weren't they? And we know exactly who was behind that... So, what on earth could they be carrying to the market, all covered up like that? Narration: As he spoke, Dheeraj and his cronies began exchanging suspicious glances with one another. But why were these people acting this way? And what exactly was Diya carrying, covered up, in that bullock cart? How did Ramlal’s crops get ruined? To find out, we must go back a few months... [Flashback Begins] Shakuntala (55) — (Smiling) Diya, dear, what are you doing out in the fields? Diya (28) — (Smiling) Mother... I just came to pick some of these tasty, juicy tomatoes to add to our vegetables. Shakuntala (55) — (Smiling) Look, dear—what wonderful tomatoes our fields have yielded this time! So red, so large, so fresh and juicy... just looking at them makes you want to eat them right up! Diya (28) (Smiling): You are absolutely right, Ma-ji... I’ve had to restrain myself with great difficulty from eating these right now—otherwise, they would become jootha (tainted/partially eaten) before I could cook them! Shakuntala (55) (Smiling): Yes, dear... these tomatoes are plenty for the curry. You go home—go home and make puris and that potato-tomato curry for breakfast. After all, your father-in-law, Dev, and Rohit have to head to the market to sell the tomatoes, don't they? Diya (28) (Smiling): Alright then, Ma-ji... Narration: Saying this, Diya walks toward the house situated right across from the fields. Diya was the daughter-in-law of a middle-class family; her in-laws owned two bighas of land and a home of their own, where Diya lived happily with her family. Diya's in-laws cultivated tomatoes on their land. Diya (28) (Smiling): These tomatoes are going to make the food taste even more delicious... They look so tasty just by looking at them! Narration: Diya carries the basket full of tomatoes into her kitchen. To prepare the potato-tomato curry, she sets the potatoes to boil and finely chops the tomatoes. Diya (28) (Smiling): I’ve finished chopping the tomatoes, and the spices are ready too. Once these potatoes are done boiling, I’ll get the curry made. In the meantime, I’ll mix the wheat flour and maida (refined flour) and knead the dough. Besides, Ma-ji did mention that eating puris made entirely of maida tends to increase body fat. Narration: Diya quickly kneads the dough; then, with the potato-tomato curry simmering on one burner, she heats oil on the other to fry the *puris*. Once the meal is ready, Diya serves everyone. After everyone has finished eating... Rohit (30) (Smiling):
