Best KARNAL Street FOOD Walk I INSANE HOT DOG + Protein Rich Smillets by ICAR NDRI + Kadhi Chawal

We had the honour of attending the National Milk Day celebration at ICAR-NDRI, commemorating the 103rd birth anniversary of Verghese Kurien, often hailed as the 'Father of the White Revolution in India.' The event celebrated his remarkable contributions to rural empowerment through the cooperative model. A standout moment was the launch of millet milk protein-based cookies by Smillets, reflecting sustainable advancements in the dairy sector. The program underlined ICAR-NDRI's dedication to research, education, and collaboration for a more sustainable dairy future. After the event, we embarked on a quick street food tour in Karnal, guided by the ever-enthusiastic Manan Madaan, a screenwriter and fellow foodie who knows the city’s culinary gems so well. Our first stop was Mahavir Kadhi Chawal Stall in the Red Cross Market. This bustling stall is a favorite for breakfast and lunch, serving yellow rice generously topped with creamy hot kadhi, onions, and spices. For those who enjoy an extra kick, a mix of ground spices is available on the counter. It was hearty, filling and a perfect way to start our food journey. Next, Manan took us to the NDRI Milk Parlour in Nyaypuri, where we tried their flavored milk and multigrain pinni, a winter special sweet. The flavours were wholesome, a delightful nod to the dairy heritage we had just been celebrating. Our third stop was Kalra Sweets & Restaurant. What immediately caught our eye was their beautifully arranged snack counter. We sampled the sooji ke golgappe, jalebi, and pav bhaji. The golgappe were a delightful burst of flavors, while the jalebi stood out as crisp, bite-sized treats that were hard to resist. Although the pav bhaji had a pleasant taste, it lacked the authentic punch we were hoping for. From there, we made our way to Arun’s Madrasi Masala Dosa, a place that has earned its fame for serving authentic South Indian cuisine. Owned and operated by individuals from Tamil Nadu, the authenticity shone through in every bite. The dosa we tried was satisfying. The crowd affirmed the popularity of this spot. The penultimate stop was the iconic Toni Hot Dog near the Clock Tower. This local sensation drew a massive crowd, all waiting for their share of the flavorful, greasy hotdog burgers. Watching Tony work at lightning speed, assembling and serving these was almost as enjoyable as eating them. The hotdog burger, made with a spiced potato filling, was unlike any classic hotdog we have had, and we loved it. We wrapped up the tour on a sweet note with a meetha paan from Chaurasia Paan in Club Market. It was the perfect end to a vibrant culinary adventure, leaving us with lingering flavors and fond memories of Karnal’s bustling food scene.
