Being over 140 years old, this Elgin grade 50 was bound to need some TLC. Most pocket watch cases have little to no dust protection, so over time particulates work their way into the case and settle in the movement. This watch in particular was probably the dirtiest one I've ever worked on, with dust covering the entire movement and small fibers permeating the gear train. With the amount of fibers on the palet fork, I'm surprised this watch was still running! This particular model, the Elgin grade 50, is an interchangeable model (meaning the movement can be configured into either an open face or hunting configuration). It's also a railroad grade movement, which may be surprising to some given it's only a 15 jewel movement. During the period this was made, a railroad grade pocket watch was only required to have 15 jewels and be adjusted to 3 positions, while averaging under 30 seconds per week.
