The University of Nizwa (UoN) is Oman's first non-profit academic Higher Education Institution. Established in 2004 in Nizwa, a region rich in a history of scholarly learning, arts, and culture, it has contributed to the development of Oman in its capacity as a leader of higher education. Aspiring to be a beacon (minaret) of knowledge and enlightenment, as embedded in its Vision, the University has striven to create a 21st Century academic institution of excellence, driven by this noble dream, and has accomplished considerable progress since its inception. As a major pioneering, entrepreneurial project in Oman, the University has evolved in the course of only 18 years into the top national private Higher Education Institution according to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation’s rankings. Construction of a new campus site is underway, while the full array of educational services is currently offered at the founding location (initial campus). The Initial Campus was established at an estimated cost of 50m OMR, with a built area of 150000m² newly-added functional buildings and facilities that support the University's Mission, goals, and academic program portfolio; plus, 56000m² of landscaping. This campus currently accommodates: 27 large and medium-sized lecture halls, 86 classrooms, 30 computer labs, 70 teaching labs, 27 research labs, 20 academic support facilities, the main library, three study areas, three student rest areas, an indoor sports facility, a multi-purpose hall, an open-air of 7500 seat amphitheater, over 800 offices, five restaurants and cafeterias, a supermarket, over 1200 car parking spaces and 1693 beds at the student accommodation facility. All these facilities have been furnished with required and relevant equipment, materials, and furniture to support the University's students, faculty, and staff effectively to achieve its Mission and attain its Vision. The Academic Affairs Domain, with its four colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Economics, Management and Information Systems, College of Engineering and Architecture, College of Pharmacy and Nursing and, the Foundation Institute lead the way in teaching and learning. Academic programs offered are carefully selected to meet immediate societal needs locally and regionally. Program offerings consist of 1 PhD, 28 Master, 42 Bachelor, 2 Higher Diploma and 27 Diploma programs. To deliver this noble aim of contributing effectively to the development of Oman's most precious assets – its human resources – UoN is proud to have 391 faculty from 38 nationalities and 704 staff overall, with 56% Omanis. Currently, 6836, students are enrolled, with 326 students representing its international student body. Over sixteen thousand students have completed their degrees in specializations vital to Oman. At the forefront of research in Oman, and steered by the Graduate Studies, Research, and External Relations Domain, the University has published 1936 articles in high IF journals in the past twelve years. It allocates 5% of its annual revenues to its Research Fund and spends over 30% of its yearly budget to support research. The University continually enhances the research infrastructure and student and faculty innovation skills and seeks to build bridges of collaboration with international research institutions. Additionally, it has invested 68 Million OMR in research activities and infrastructure from 2004 to 2021, resulting in many research publications and improved academic world rankings. Community engagement is the strength of the University. All units, as well as all members of the University community, contribute to society service. UoN units with dedicated activities to serve this purpose, such as the Life Long Learning Institute, Center for Society Service, Center for Consultancy Service and Innovation Transfer, the Voluntary Work Program, and DHAD Institute for Teaching Arabic to Speakers of Other Languages. This contributes to the community's educational, economic, and social advancement through its annual batch of graduates. Its dedication and involvement in research and innovation, cultural activities, and cooperation and partnership with national and international institutions continually support its Mission.
