What if you could run an aquarium with no filter, no CO₂, no liquid ferts, and barely any maintenance—and still have crystal clear water and thriving plants and fish? 🌿🐠 This is how I build self-cleaning aquariums. Forget weekly water changes. In these tanks, fast-growing plants do the heavy lifting by absorbing ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate directly from the water. Once the ammonium is used up, plants switch to nitrate as their nitrogen source, naturally keeping nitrate levels low—mine stay between 0–20 ppm. ✅ Worried about TDS buildup? Plants help with that too. They absorb minerals, ions, and nutrients right from the water. I usually sit between 150–250 TDS depending on the tank. That means instead of water changes, you just top off evaporated water—simple. And there's no filter to clean because you don't need one! The plants themselves act as biological filtration. Biofilm on leaves traps particles, and shrimp, snails, and waste-eating bacteria handle the rest—giving you passive mechanical filtration. No gravel vacuuming either. Waste breaks down naturally and turns into plant food, so you don’t need liquid fertilizers. Once your tank is established (2–3 months), your regular chores are: • Feeding 🐟 • Plant trimming ✂️ • Topping off water 💧 Maybe a water change once or twice per year for tannins, and that’s it. Algae? Not really a problem. Fast growers outcompete it, and shrimp/snails keep any leftovers under control. #aquarium #fishtank #plantedtank
