Sons of Asena - Epic Turkic Music

Music based on Altai traditional music, vocals by Farya Faraji, lyrics by Giuseppe Régimbeau and Maëlle Cadieux, flute by Paul Johnson. The Epic Turkic Music is a project where the sounds of the current, living traditions of the Turkic peoples are used as a framing device to explore themes relating to the mythology, folklore and history of the Turkic peoples. These are not historical recreations nor "epic music" in the cinematic soundtrack sense, but a project of ethnomusicological research and performance that showcases the epic narrative repertoire of the Turkic people through their living musical traditions. This song is rooted in the Altai musical tradition as it exists today, and the melody is taken from the traditional Altai air "Kara Suu" (Spring Water), which can be heard here performed by the band Altai Kai:    • Altai Kai - Kara Suu (Spring Water)   Altai traditional music as it exists today is marked by the synthesis of traditional native elements with Western elements inherited from Soviet musical influence. Nowadays, the tovshuur, the dombra-like lute of the Altai, is often used to accompany the main melody by providing a Western, tonal chord progression, albeit with dyads, since the instrument only has two strings. Throat-singing drones are also nowadays used to provide additional harmonic support rooted in Western tonal harmonic logic. Melodies are most often in a pentatonic scale, but also include diatonic, heptatonic intervals as accidentals, something also heard in alot of Mongolian or Chinese music. The instrumentation of this piece is based on current practices in Altai and neighbouring music traditions, which employ the frame drum, tovshuur, and flutes, as can be seen in this video:    • Bai Terek - Altaidyn Alkyjy - Blessing of ...   Check out the works of the band Altai Kai in order to learn more about the style of music this song emulates. The lyrics are original and relate the origin-myth of the Turkic peoples, wherein the she-wolf Asena raised a young boy who would become the ancestor of all the Turkic nations. Note that the lyrics are in Old Turkic, but due to the philological challenges of historical languages, they may be grammatically incorrect or of uncertain historical inaccuracy. I'm not a philologist and can only rely on the best educated guesses of my colleagues, so please bear this in mind, as the lyrics are exactly that: an educated guess based on linguistic evidence.
