The EU’s political and economic model—based on liberal democracy, rule of law and multilateralism—has contributed to a spell of security and prosperity unprecedented in European history. But Europe's outlook offers little to inspire optimism. After weathering consecutive crises (migration, COVID, energy), Europe now faces profound challenges: growing economic and political nationalism; lagging increasingly far behind the US and China in technological innovation; and a growing gap between the impacts of climate change and political willingness to confront it. Can the EU and like-minded democracies address these challenges without radical change? If not, what exactly needs to change?
