Begin improvising more chromatically in your jazz lines by using simple tricks to play on altered dominants! LINKS: As a follow up to a previous vlog: 7 LEVELS OF A7 here: • 7 Levels of Jazz Chord Scales: Symbols, Mo... Also "classic" blog and video lesson on playing jazzy with altered dominants: • Jazz Guitar Lesson: How to Sound Jazzy wit... In this short vlog, I go through the nitty gritty of starting on a plain vanilla A7 (coming from a pure mixolydian) into altering first one note, and then TWO notes. Chord progression for entire video: | Cmaj7 / / / | A7 / / / | Dm7 / / / | G7 / / / | We will spend most of our time discussing the A7 chord. -- Step 0 (Ground floor) A7 is mixolydian (aka A13) A B C# D E F# G This is the exact same scale construction as D MAJOR. A7 is the V. No biggie. Pretty boring. -- Step 1 - A7(b13) Just lower the 6th note of the mixo scale A7(b13) is A B C# D E F G This is the exact same scale construction as D MELODIC MINOR Not so surprisingly, the next chord in the sequence is Dm. Sometimes jazz musicians call this "melodic minor of destination". It's like saying, let me grab that V chord that lives on the fifth degree of the melodic minor scale (instead of the major scale). It's like the melodic minor equivalent of mixolydian. -- Step 2 - A7(b13 b9) Just lower the 2nd and 6th notes of the mixo scale A7(b13 b9) is A Bb C# D E F G This is the exact scale construction as D HARMONIC MINOR. Of course, the next chord is Dm. So we, again, built an equivalent of mixolydian but for harmonic minor. Right? Let's grab the V chord that "lives" in the harmonic minor scale. -- Step 3 - BONUS - For Dessert! Here's how easy it is to go from the C major scale (during Cmaj7) and the altered A7 scale with just one note difference: C major: C D E F G A B A7(b13): C# D E F G A B So during Cmaj7, Dm7 and G7 --- just use C major notes! And during A7 -- use all C major notes except make the C a C# -- OTHER PLATFORMS 🎸 Learn jazz faster and take your chops to the next level, book a call with Marc https://nextlevel.jazzguitarlessons.net/ More free lessons on blog: https://www.jazzguitarlessons.net/blog Subscribe on YouTube: / jazzguitarlessonsnet Like on Facebook: / jazzguitarlessons.net
