Tank Brigade (Czech: Tanková brigáda) is a 1955 Czechoslovakian film made about the World War II Eastern Front conflict between German and Czechoslovakian forces. The film is largely a propaganda film, depicting actions of the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Tank Armoured Brigade, with Soviet forces, who both fought their way to the Czechoslovak border, and participated in the Battle of the Dukla Pass. The film depicts the struggle for Slovakia and the successful liberation of Ostrava in Northern Moravia. One scene depicts a battle for the Miloše Sýkory bridge in Ostrava city, featuring the actual bridge. Three thousand members of the Czechoslovak People's Army participated in the film. -- After the Second World War, the town's German-speaking population was expelled. At a massacre at an internment camp, 231 German-speaking citizens were killed. The liberation of Ostrava by the Red Army led to the city entering its greatest period of expansion. Initially the new housing projects were on a relatively small scale, focused on the Poruba district and featuring architecture in the Socialist realist style. Later the authorities built larger-scale developments of prefabricated apartment blocks in Poruba and created a series of satellite estates to the south of the city (Ostrava-Jih). The city centre was gradually depopulated and people were moved out to the suburbs. This was part of a long-term plan to destroy the city centre entirely and turn the land over to coal-mining.
