You’re in for an adventure today! We just checked out of Bear River Casino and are heading to the Avenue of the Giants to explore the towering redwoods. Along the way, we’ll drive through a tree, take a short hike through the forest, and then make our way to a casino by the ocean where we’ll try our luck and gamble with a couple of our subscribers! The Shrine Drive‑Thru Tree is one of the oldest and most famous roadside attractions along the scenic Avenue of the Giants. Located in a grove of massive coast redwoods, the tree became a tourist stop in the 1920s when travelers driving the old Redwood Highway began passing through its naturally hollowed trunk. The opening was originally formed by a lightning-sparked fire that burned out the center of the tree and was later widened so cars could safely drive through it. The giant redwood is estimated to stand around 175–275 feet tall, with a trunk about 21 feet in diameter and a circumference of roughly 64 feet. The tunnel through the base measures about 7 feet wide and tall, allowing most standard vehicles to slowly pass through the tree for a memorable photo and classic Northern California road-trip experience.
