Instead of moping I got a fun Chris Cornell concert story for y'all. I was 20 years old and at the time I was singing in a band with some friends from elementary and high school called The Devlin Progress. We made a 2 song demo a few days before I attended the Audioslave show at the UIC pavilion. Our sound was like if Kyuss made a baby with Faith No More. I got the big silly idea in my head that I should take the sharpie-scribbled-label-having demo, sneak into the pit, and throw the damn thing on stage and maybe a cool guitar tech would hear it and start following us on MySpace (ahem, remember I said I was only 20). 15 minutes into the second opening band's set I executed a guardrail jump'n'dash into the general admission area like a boss, far away from my previous nosebleed seats. I weaved through the crowd like a viper in a rathole. Reaching the front row I proceeded to mosh the night away with Chicago's finest. When they were done with their set Audioslave left temporarily to pump the crowd up for the encore. We all figured to it to be the song "Cochise" since they hadn't played it yet and it was the band's first single. Tom Morello's helicopter hits of Cochise began and I walked towards the front guardrail only to have my way blocked by a 6'6" marine who was elbowing anyone who got within 5 feet of him or his girlfriend. But my persistence to get to front was Spartan. After my third or fourth elbow to the chest I looked up at Chris Cornell who was standing over my section of the front row doing some type of epic gesturing. I whip out the demo and wave it in the air and magically it catches his eye. He looks down at me and I point to the disc and then point to him and then I made a motion to inform him that I'm gonna throw the son of bitch right at him. In the middle of him belting that last "...so you don't feel a thaaaaaaaaaaaaaang" of the bridge he looks down and gives me the nod of the century. I imagine this is the same type of nanosecond nod a wide receiver gives a quarterback before he jukes right to ditch his cover and make the game winning play. I proceed to Hail Mary this half an oz of plastic towards my musical idol with the grace of platypus. He. Totally. Caught. It. He shoots me a smirk and the whole crowd (marine included) in the front lifts me up like I'm MJ at the buzzer or something. For a second a rock God agreed to catch and hold one of us mere mortal's offerings. Whether he listened to it or not I'll never know, but that doesn't really matter. He didn't need to contact me, him catching it said enough. The road for Soundgarden was long and mostly in a van. Him catching the cd reminded me that we need work towards our goals and dreams no matter how much of a pipe dream they may seem to be. I would've been content with Tom Morello's guitar tech grabbing it after the show but I yielded much much better results just for giving the silly and impossible a try. Don't believe me? Ask @barbaraColeman for confirmation. She and her now husband Anthony had a great view of this ridiculousness from the first balcony. Well anyways here's a version of "Like Suicide" that I recorded before going to work yesterday. I was reasonably choked up the whole time so sorry if I sound flat and/or distressed. I decided on this song before the detail of his demise was revealed, sorry if it comes off like a sick joke. If anything his music got me through Times of Trouble. Music is powerful, Music is life. Screaming Life. There's takes of this that I couldn't hold my composure but this is the best I could do in a short time. We lost in my opinion one of the best rock vocalists of all time. I could go on for days about how much his songs meant to me but I'd rather just show you through my guitar and vox. RIP to my Disappearing One who vanished 'fore the curtains drawn.
